Report on the Regional Final at John O’Gaunt GC, 29 September 2008

John O’Gaunt GC provided the scene for the Eastern Regional Final. The club is located near Sandy off the A1 in Bedfordshire. The course was in good condition although recent work on the greens made putting tricky. However, the day stayed relatively bright and dry throughout, with a stiff breeze to test the competitors.

The player to hit the longest drive was Mark Brown of Ipswich RFC. Nearest the Pin was won by John Atterwill of Hertford RFC. The top scoring pair were the Temperleys (Snr & Jnr) of Hemel Hemstead RFC with 42 points.

Third place on the day was taken by Civil Service RFC with 74 points, who won Wooden Spoon umbrellas and a RAM match ball and kicking tee for their club. Second prize went to Barnet Elizabethans RFC with 76 points who won Wooden Spoon feather bags and 2 RAM balls & tees for their club. The winners were Hemel Hemstead RFC with 77 points. Messrs Temperley (Snr & Jnr), Adams & McClement went home with 3 RAM match balls & tees for their club and Wooden Spoon’s new Callaway sports bag each for themselves.

The top three teams qualified for the National Final at Walton Heath GC on Friday 17 October together with Bishop Stortford RFC Team 1.

Temperley Snr of Hemel Hemstead rounded off a near perfect day for himself by winning the case of Laithwaites wine in the raffle.

Thank you to all who participated and good luck to those in the National Final.
