"I'll be on the driving range in a desparate attempt to get into my club's team" - John Inverdale, journalist and broadcaster.
A warm sunny day greeted the players and the heat continued throughout. Conditions were made tougher by a cooling breeze that made stopping the ball on the greens almost impossible. However, the course and arrangements at the Gogs were of the customary highest standard and all players enjoyed the day.
The player to hit the longest drive was David Crewe of Old Cooperians RFC. Nearest the Pin was won by Steve Clark of Cambridge RFC. The top scoring pair were Simon Hughes and Oli Hall of Ipswich 2 with a creditable 43 points.
Third place on the day was taken by Nuneaton RFC with 80 points. Second prize went to Holt RFC with 81 points and the winners were Ipswich 2 RFC with 82 points. Messrs Blythe, Tuckwell, Hughes & Hall went home with a Ram International rugby ball for their club and Wooden Spoon’s new Callaway feather bag each for themselves.
The top three teams qualified for the Regional Final at John O’Gaunt GC on Monday 29 September together with Ipswich 1 (past National Champions), Old Cooperians, Huntingdon 2 & Diss.
Don Hobbis carried off the case of Laithwaites wine in the raffle, making the journey back to Nuneaton more pleasurable!
