Betchworth Park provided a stern test once again for the Surrey qualifier of the Championship. Early rain did little to dampen spirits and as it eased, the course offered a real test for the competitors.
The player to hit the longest drive was Stuart Irvine of Dorking RFC. Nearest the Pin was won by Jim Hendey of Tunbridge Wells RFC. The top scoring pair were Stuart Catton & Gavin Leathen of Dorking RFC with a well crafted 44 points.
Third place on the day was taken by Haling Manor RFC with 77 points on a countback. Second prize went to Old Walcountians RFC also with 77 points and the winners were Dorking RFC Team 1 RFC with 85 points. Messrs Catton, Leathen, Cruikshank & Rees went home with a Ram International rugby ball for their club and Wooden Spoon’s new Callaway feather bag each for themselves.
Dorking RFC are good supporters of Wooden Spoon and had hosted their annual Minis Festival only the day before, at which Spoon had been welcomed to do some fundraising.
The top three teams qualified for the Regional Final at Burhill GC on 2 October together with Romsey, Old Mid Whitgiftians, Tunbridge & Wimbledon.
£385 was raised on the Gamble hole and raffle for Wooden Spoon, which will be spent on projects in Surrey.
